I’m New

What Kind of Church Are You?

We are a theologically reformed Southern Baptist congregation (Est. 1890) with a vision and mission to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our community with authenticity.  Though Southern Baptist in denomination, and positively influenced by resurgence of 16th–17th century reformed theology, we like to emphasize that we are Christian in doctrine and our supreme commitment is to the Word of God as the absolute rule and authority for faith and practice.

What Are Your Worship Services Like?

Our worship services include elements of music, prayer, offerings, the ordinances of baptism  & the Lord’s Supper, and expository preaching. We sing from the Hymns of Grace hymnal published by Master’s Seminary, which includes traditional & modern hymns & songs by Stuart Townend, Keith Getty, John Newton, Isaac Watts, Bob Kauflin, Sovereign Grace Music, R.C. Sproul, John MacArthur, and others.

What is the Preaching Style; What is it Like?

The pastor begins with prayer and the reading of the text.  Where the Bible speaks, God speaks (2 Tim 3:16–17; 2 Pet 1:21); and where God has spoken, the people are bound by what they hear to obey it (Deut 4:36; Heb 12:25–29). Essentially, to open the Bible is to open God’s mouth (Matt 4:4).  This High view of God’s word, dependence on God’s Spirit, and dedication to precision in understanding a given text drives the preaching at Catherine Lake Baptist Church.  Some call this preaching ‘expository’ because the aim is to read, explain, and apply the Scriptures in light of Christ toward man’s ultimate purpose to become like Him (1 Cor 2:14–16; 2 Tim 4:1; Col 1:28; Rom 8:29).  Preaching is defined by after having taught the text, the pastor is essentially charged to preach it by reproving (showing man’s guilt); rebuking (calling for a stop to sin); and exhorting (urge obedience with dependency on the grace of Christ) ; moreover, he is to do this with patience with people and with lots of good theology (2 Tim 3:16–17; 4:1–5).
