“Father” – A Privileged Address
Evidently, people of Jesus day had a higher view of God than we do, because (for them) to call God your father was worthy of death. John 5:18 says, ”This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.” What a privilege we have to call on God as our Father, as Christian believers! Calling God His Father, for Jesus, meant he would die; calling God our Father, for us, means we may live.
I don’t want to view prayer lesser than Jesus did–namely to call on our Father in heaven. I want to be sure to feel the weight and glory of being able to do so, every time I pray. Doesn’t it make a difference today to know that?! Does it not make the word “Father” roll of your tongue differently to know how much it cost Jesus? Does it not inspire worship to know that we are told to call on God as Father, by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ?
I remember sitting in a class one time in seminary, and praying in a group and hearing this girl pray; it struck me how she said “Father” it was full of endearment, love, grace, feeling, etc. I could hear her being a child of God through that one word. May it be so for all who call on Him.
