Sometimes I Wonder…

So, I read this, this morning:

And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" And He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?" And he answered, "YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." And He said to him, "You have answered correctly; DO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE." (Luke 10:25-28)

Of course the passage says this "lawyer" is later trying to justify himself in v.29.  Even so, what Jesus says in response to the lawyer is what gets my attention:  "Do this and you will live."  Now, obviously from v.29, man cannot justify himself, even by works of the Law, but yet Jesus answers "Do this and you will live."  Why?  Well, I do not claim to know all of that answer.  But one thing I did was look up where it says "Do this and you will live."

Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, "Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'I am the LORD your God. 'You shall not do what is done in the land of Egypt where you lived, nor are you to do what is done in the land of Canaan where I am bringing you; you shall not walk in their statutes. 'You are to perform My judgments and keep My statutes, to live in accord with them; I am the LORD your God. 'So you shall keep My statutes and My judgments, by which a man may live if he does them; I am the LORD. (Leviticus 18:1-5)

The next verse begins "None of you shall approach any blood relative of his to uncover his nakedness; I am the LORD."  The chapter is on immoral relations.  And the lawyer would have known that!  Perhaps Jesus was taking him to where he fell short.  Or since this begins a series of Laws (Ch. 19 on idolatry), he could have been pointing to various things.  But since the lawyer is found trying to justify himself, it seems that he was guilty of something, and was not doing as Jesus commanded him to do.

Obedience is quite important, it is the answer to eternal life.  What?  I thought it was justification by faith.  Yes, but James says faith is proven by works.  Yes, but no man is justified by the Law.  Yes, but faith obeys the Law.  (These are some of my own considerations in trying to work this out.)  Even so, I believe man is justified by faith alone.  But we must consider, like one person answered on a Wed. night, how is a person saved; and that person said by works.  I corrected that person immediately, "No, Jesus has done the work for  you on the Cross!"  (Such a prestigious Gospel preaching answer, I must say, I thought!)  But should I have answered like Jesus–what works?  I think so. Why, because after that person told me how they were thinking about works of believing and trusting.  I did not take time to listen to the person.  Jesus did listen.  He said, " Do this and you will live."  Perhaps we should respond more like Jesus, and take it from there, rather than fearing that justification by faith is being demolished by a seeker's answer. Or even fearing that God is not in control.  The Law is the tutor to lead us to Christ, why don't we use it appropriately or more often?

MarkingSymbols.doc (13292 KB)

I found these Key Word symbols for marking your Bible here.  Reading the comments section on that page, it says:

"The Key Word Symbol pages are not original to me. They are a resource that was shared with me by a friend from Precept headquarters in Chattanooga. I wish I knew who did them so I could thank them! However, Precept Ministries is currently working on a project similar to what you described – a laminated fold-out that fits in your Bible. So stay tuned. When it comes out, I will feature it at preceptcamden.com."

I have put them in a Word Document for easy printing.

Theological Clarity Workbook

This workbook is based on Christian Beliefs by Grudem.  Thankfully, there are more and more resources becoming available for the training of Christians and Church Leaders.  I started using Grudem's Christian Beliefs for a Sunday School Class, which was a great resource to begin with, and it looks like this resource makes teaching these subjects even more accessible to more and more people.
