The Ballast and the Florescent Light of God’s Glory

I am preparing to preach on the second and third chapters of Revelation over the weeks ahead.  No other section in the Bible has been made so clear by Jesus as to his desires (or better put: demands) for the church.  When I was on the verge of losing confidence in the church altogether, God used Revelation 2-3 to speak to me concerning what a healthy church looks like, and what it doesn’t look like.  These chapters became for me a ballast for the fluorescent light of his glory to shine from.  When I look into these chapters, I see what the church is supposed to be and can be.  When I was looking for a church, I was looking for a church that cared about the things that Jesus cared about.  There are other ministries that have helped me in this cause, 9marks, to name one.  But the pinnacle of seeing what Jesus desires in a church is found in Rev. 2-3; everything else is complimentary.  I was encouraged further to preach on this topic not only because it has affected me such, but because others are looking for healthy churches today.  Furthermore, I read this:

The times are changing.  For seventy million baby boomers, for example life has changed.  It seems very short now.  What used to be a fond nostalgia for the sixties has turned into an ache that the beloved decade is now so far away that its main meaning is:  we are dying.  Different ages get the message in different ways.

And not only life, but the world too is shrinking.  People don’t like Christians all around us.  Only a strange providence keeps our churches from being bombed.  It is only a matter of time till the reality of the rest of the world comes home.  And all the while we are called by Christ to go to them, love them, sacrifice for them, bring the gospel to them.  The Great Commission is not child’s play.  It is costly.  Very costly. (John Piper, Spectacular Sins, p. 13).

So, I find myself at a time when I desire to help people find healthy churches which are equipped to fulfill the Great Commission during difficult times.  The ultimate aim is that the church would display the glory of God in these times and the church itself would be the ballast for the flourscent light of God’s glory.
